Resumen

El artículo analiza el Diario 1974-1983 de Ángel Rama publicado en Montevideo en el 2001. Este texto es leído al menos en tres niveles cruciales e interconectados de su estructuración: como una prolongada y sagaz meditación sobre la historia, el destino y las características del intelectual latinoamericano; como un análisis del latinoamericanismo académico (especialmente del norteamericano) y, por último, como una reflexión compleja sobre el exilio del intelectual que, inevitablemente, parece ser, por un lado, uno de sus destinos posibles, un peligro siempre al acecho en nuestras frágiles economías, culturas y políticas; y por otro, uno de sus rasgos definitorios y constitutivos.

Abstract

Focusing on Ángel Rama’s Diario 1974-1983 (published in Montevideo in 2001), this essay analyses three crucial and interconnected levels of operation in this text: the meditation on the history, future and defining traits of the Latin American intellectual, the status of academic Latin Americanism (especially of its North American version) and the complex reflection on the intellectual in exile. This condition of exile seems to be at the same time one of the intellectual’s possible destinies —that is to say, a destiny always lurking in the perennially fragile Latin American economies, cultures and politics, and also one of the intellectual’s defining and constitutive features.
